RIASSUNTO IN INGLESE (SUMMARY)

The narrative of Beowulf’s funeral consists of three parts, neatly devoted to the three stages of the funeral: the preparation of the pyre, the accomplishment of the ceremony and the burial of the sovereign. At first, the Geats build the timber stack on which Beowulf will be cremated, wide, with helmets, shields and armaments on the top of it; thereafter, the King’s warriors lay down their lord on the pyre, and then fire is lighted up. As the fire gradually turns to ashes Beowulf’s body, the Geats weep bitterly on their King, and a Geat woman sings a gloomy and disconsolate song. Once accomplished the ritual, the Geats build a tall mound on a promontory overlooking the sea, as a mausoleum for Beowulf. Inside the mausoleum, behind a huge wall, are set Beowulf’s ashes and a rich treasure. Finally the Geat warriors ride around the mound, singing lamentations.

After fifty years of reign, Beowulf, at present an old man, is forced to face a dragon that threatens his nation.
The hero succeeds in defeating and killing the dragon, but during the clash he is fatally wounded, and dies shortly thereafter.
Thus, the Geats set up Beowulf’s funeral.

The narrative of Beowulf’s funeral consists of three parts, neatly devoted to the three stages of the funeral: the preparation of the pyre, the accomplishment of the ceremony and the burial of the sovereign.
At first, the Geats build the timber stack on which Beowulf will be cremated, wide, with helmets, shields and armaments on the top of it; Dapprima i Geati realizzano la catasta di legname sulla quale Beowulf verrà cremato, molto ampia, e sormontata da elmi, scudi e armamenti;
thereafter, the King’s warriors lay down their lord on the pyre, and then fire is lighted up. quindi i cavalieri del re adagiano su di essa il loro signore e viene appiccato il fuoco.
Infine i cavalieri Geati cavalcano intorno al tumulo intonando canti funebri.
