RIASSUNTO IN INGLESE (SUMMARY)

The text consists of two parts: in the former part (lines 1-10), Romeo looks at Juliet from far away, and, by means of a passionate monologue, he magnifies her ineffable beauty. In the final part of his monologue, Romeo declares he has never known true love before he has seen Juliet, and decides to wait for the end of the ball, in order to approach the girl, and touch her hand. Starting from verse eleven the scene changes, and the text reports the words that Romeo and Juliet exchange once the young man has approached the girl. Romeo, touching Juliet’s hand, refers to the girl’s hand as a “reliquary”, and to his own lips as two “blushing pilgrims.” From now on, the whole dialogue evolves in the form of a sequence of metaphors drawn from the world of pilgrims’ devotional practices to saints, under which is hidden the hesitation of the two young lovers about their first kiss. In the end of the passage, Romeo kisses Juliet.

ANTEFATTO DEL BRANO
The Montagues and the Capulets, the two chief families of Verona, have been divided for generations by terrible hatred.
Despite that, Romeo, the only son of the old Montague, is in love with a niece of the Capulets, Rosalin, and, since his love is not requited by her, he lives in anguish.
One night Romeo, wearing a mask, takes part in a party at Capulets’ house; in that circumstance, he sees Juliet for the first time.
Looking at the girl, Romeo feels a deeply intense feeling arising, he forgets Rosalin, and he decides to approach straightaway Juliet to touch her hand and talk to her.
The scene in the text The masque occurs at this point of the story, displaying the moment when Romeo and Juliet talk to each other for the first time. RIASSUNTO DEL BRANO
Romeo, touching Juliet’s hand, refers to the girl’s hand as a “reliquary”, and to his own lips as two “blushing pilgrims.”
From now on, the whole dialogue evolves in the form of a sequence of metaphors drawn from the world of pilgrims’ devotional practices to saints, under which is hidden the hesitation of the two young lovers about their first kiss.
In the end of the passage, Romeo kisses Juliet. Infine Romeo bacia Giulietta.
