ANTEFATTO IN INGLESE (BACKSTORY)

The Canterbury Tales are a collection of short stories, all settled within a frame-story. As a consequence, the individual narratives do not appear in a mere sequence, but in the form of a “tale in the tale”, gathered within a broader story that holds them together, and links them to a contextual situation. The frame narrative of the Canterbury Tales is the story of a pilgrimage. The narrator, who’s on a pilgrimage trip towards the tomb of Saint Thomas Beckett in Canterbury, stays at the Tabard Inn in London. In that place, he is acquainted with a group of twenty-nine pilgrims, also heading to Canterbury, and decides to join them. The innkeeper proposes to the group of the twenty-nine pilgrims and the narrator to spend the time of the journey each one telling four stories – two during the outward voyage, and two during the return. The pilgrims accept the proposal, and, in turn, begin to tell the novels the book consist of. Before the narration of the stories begins, however, the narrator offers a detailed description of each of his twenty-nine travel companions. The Wife of Bath text is one of those descriptions, and it’s devoted to the character of an enterprising and emancipatend lady from Bath.

RIASSUNTO IN INGLESE (SUMMARY)

In Wife of Bath’s introduction, the narrator portraits an enterprising feminine figure, entirely freed from prejudices and conventions that in the Middle Age restrict women’s freedom and autonomy. In order to achieve such an outcome, the narrator employs a composite description, in which he mixes features regarding different aspects (physical appearance, way of dressing, profession, attitudes, past vicissitudes). Such supposedly disparate items, have yet in common a specific psychological purpose and the aim to delineate all, first and foremost, a personality. And every Wife of Bath’s feature suggests a personality of peculiar resourcefulness and independence of thought. For what concerns physical appearance the lady from Bath is presented as a woman of bold and sensual beauty. For what concerns profession, narrator outlines that she is a skilled dressmaker and a woman succeeded in business. Her clothing is presented as flashy and exquisite, so that it suggests ideas of wealth and no fear for people’s judgement. In her past there are five dead husbands, as well as youthful love-stories, and many pilgrimages in distant places. Furthermore it is outlined her desire to excel in social life, her laid-back and confident way of riding her horse.

The Canterbury Tales are a collection of short stories, all settled within a frame-story. I Canterbury Tales costituiscono una raccolta di novelle “a cornice”.
As a consequence, the individual stories do not appear in a mere sequence, but in the form of a “tale in the tale”, gathered within a broader story that holds them together, and links them to a contextual situation. Ciò vuol dire che le singole novelle non compaiono in semplice successione, bensì in forma di “racconto nel racconto”, unificate all’interno di una storia più ampia che le tiene insieme e le include.
